The rising prevalence of drug use in Africa and Asia presents a global health and social crisis. with serious consequences for individual well-being, economic stability, and societal development, the illegal drug trade, rising drug consumption, and related criminal activities pose significant threats to communities across both regions. Drug challenges disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, including children, youth, and women, undermining human rights, public health, and social justice. The unique challenges related to drug trafficking, production and consumption across the regions call for a collaborative approach involving experts, organizations and policy makers from both regions to develop effective environmental level and individual-level prevention solutions.
Afri-Asia Drug Summit is a leave-no-one-behind global south drug summit convening broad-based actors ranging from prevention, Treatment, recovery and policy to discuss comprehensive approaches and strengthen joint drug demand reduction commitments to protect and safeguard the health and wellbeing of children, youth and women. The Summit follows the successful Children Matter – Right to a Drug-Free Childhood conference held in Kerala, India, in 2023.
The recently concluded summit of the future led to the adoption of the Pact for The Future, which underscores the critical need of collaboration among civil society, government and other stakeholders for the good of the young population affected by drug abuse and other related factors.
The Summit aims to therefore provides a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership between the two regions to catalyzing concrete commitments to strengthen drug-demand-reduction prevention efforts, focusing on prevention, treatment, and policy development. It is clear that Drug Demand reduction does not exist in a vacuum and it has given birth to cross-cutting issues affecting the young ever-growing population,
It activates best-practice sharing among policymakers and practitioners on practical and innovative approaches taken to address the emerging trends including those connected to Furthermore, the Summit creates a platform for the policymakers and practitioners in both continents to share the best practices in terms of innovative approaches to address the emerging trends on issues related to drug demand reduction which is closely interconnected to Crime, Human Trafficking, Violation of children’s rights and gender equality.
Last but not least the conference seeks to promote the best policies in the line of drug prevention across the two continents, this can only be achieved through a close partnership with the policy makers and in this regard the conference will be under the patronage of National Assembly Speaker one from Africa and one from Asia.
